Internal or external vents on closed off chimney breast?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.41 PM

Hi, I have a ground floor flat in a converted victorian semi-detached house which I am selling. The buyers survey has pointed out a lack of ventilation on the closed off chimneys and is insisting installing airbricks before the sale. The two flats above me have them installed on the inside so I suspect that mine may have been removed at some point. My question is should I have the vents installed on the inside or outside, my inclination is outside would be better? The walls are 13" thick, would it be the case of the builder removing a brick and drilling holes through to the flue and installing the air brick? How critical is the getting the correct height when working from outside? Many thanks.

You can vent either outside the stack or inside the stack , if you vent inside the stack warm air will go up the chimney and keep your chimney aired and keep damp away . I would also make sure your chimney is clear by having it swept by a professional chimney sweep cos if it’s blocked then the vents are useless and it’s something that we do .
