Stop neighbours cooking seeping through walls
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.57 PM
I have a terraced house, been here 35yrs and my new neighbours moved in 6 months ago. Their kitchen is on the same wall as mine and they cook spicy foods all the time. The smell is coming through the wall. I put our extractor on which helps but the smell is traveling upstairs to our bedroom now. I have an air purifier in the bedroom now and have ordered charcoal to soak up the smells hopefully but is there anything else we can do?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Try using classics such as baking soda, vinegar, and even coffee grounds. These not only help get rid of bad smells but they can also make your room smell better, especially with coffee grounds.

Hi,
I’d suggest checking if there’s any obvious holes in the wall which back onto your neighbours. I should imagine the smell will be travelling through a old hole from a pipe or maybe a slight crack in the mortar.
It could even be something as simple as a old pipe that’s been taken out and hasn’t been filled back in, I’d suggest having a quick look to see if it is any of these things. I can’t give you a definitive answer as I’ve not seen it first hand. I hope this helps

I would suggest checking the others neighbour extractor fan, to see where exactly is the air blowing, if it’s connected right into your wall then obviously it will blow the smell though to you.To get rid of the smell you can use vinegar a baking soda. It may be worth checking the Chinese extractor fun’s, they are so powerful and they will take all the smell out.

Masking the odours is probably not the solution you're looking for.
Those fumes are getting through gaps somehow. I would consult a builder and give them some information about the age of the house and type of construction.
