Should roof lights have double or triple corner joist hangers to support structure?

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.57 PM

We're putting in a 2 x 1m double glazed roof light in to a flat roof and wanted to know if the structure supporting the glass pane should be fitted with double or triple corner joist hangers, and the single joist hangers on all other joists? Are there regs on this? Cheers MyBuilder Community. Peter

Hello Peter, The regulations to this job require all timbers supporting the roof light/lantern to be double up, in very rare cases tripled up but this is very rare normally doubled up is more then enough, it also requires timber joist hangers fitted & fixed in place with twist nails. You will need planning permission & building regulations for this job, they can advise you further if you are confused or unsure. Regards Frankie BT Roofing Services Limited

Yes most roof light systems should be doubled up for extra support and may even be trippled up depending on the size of the sky light but this should normally be stated in the building plan/ regulations. Billy B newell roofing

Yes doubled up is more than adequate to support a window this size. If the span was greater I would suggest the triple hoist
