TO NEW BOILER OR NOT TO NEW BOILER. THAT IS THE QUESTION.

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.57 PM

We’ve got a green star bosch boiler that must be 12 years plus old. The heating system is still using a conventional boiler and the hot water cylinder is in the spare room. The “switch” part has been replaced 3 times and the boiler at times does like like an engine taking off when it turns on. I want to know: 1) would a new boiler be more economical? 2) is it worth getting a new system just to free up space in the spare room? (I want to change it to my son’s upgraded bedroom 3) do we keep the old one till it breaks? We have the heating on a lot (hubby works from home and likes to be warm) so I’m concerned about the bills. We’ve also got a large lounge with only 2 double radiators and they’re not very big so the lounge never gets warm - hence why hubby cracks the heating up all day. Can we add a radiator? It’s an old house which has been extended either end so the pipe work looks mad when I try to follow it. Plastic bendy pipes have gone through the loft to get to one side and we’ve got traditional copper pipes the rest of the house. We’ve also got a pump in the spare room cupboard to feed the power showers… would that be going to? Sorry for the essay.

1. Newer boilers are more economical and more energy efficient when being run. It is always worth upgrading when you need to. 2. The system you have needs alot more room then a combination boiler. There is alot more components dotted around to go wrong, if you was to go for a combi boiler all the components are situated inside the boiler so you dont have to worry about everything being in different rooms when it needs to be changed. Also meaning alot more space in cupboards and loft areas. 3. There are to answers to this one personally if it's not broke don't fix it, But as the same time it could break when you most need the heating (during winter) if its something you can afford to do in the summer when demand for heating isn't as high it's best to change it then. If your radiators in the lounge are small and there is space to make them bigger it's probably worth making them bigger rather then adding a new one. The pump for the shower will possibly be going if its not needed for the shower like a mira shower have there own pumps. It would all depend on your water pressure coming into the property as that would determin the pressure at your shower. There is alot more detail into changing systems it is always a good idea to have someone come and look and investigate what you currently have. I hope this helped.
