Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.03 PM

Hi , I am considering buying a Victorian terrace 1901 house. It is appeared that there is entrance to the cellar but when you step down approximately 10 steps it looks professionally blocked , so just a clean white wall. There is ventilation? pipe in this wall. As this house been reposed I am unable carry on survey. Any advise if it was safe to complete block the cellar ?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, most Victorian houses with cellar were used as coal bunkers or simler use, the depths depending on type of house, A idea would be to find out if a house was sold in the street in recent times by contacting the local estate agent that would have the details of houses sold , They should be able to advise,

A light of 10 steps down to a cellar doesn't sound or seem normal. This almost certainly seems that the wall was a later added to the original design. This could have been done for a number of reasons including draught reduction whilst maintaining some storage.. It would be easy enough to make a small hole to see beyond the wall or to drill a hole in it and use a camera to see beyond it and find out what lays beyond.. I would recommend further investigation.
