Loud humming and vibrating coming from the cellar

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.03 PM

For a few weeks we've had loud humming in the walls, often when we use the water e.g. flush the toilet, use the washing machine. It usually lasts for a few seconds and then goes off, occurring a few times per day, if that. We have, however, also noticed it when we're not using the water/heating, and thought it may be due to next door. However, I spoke to our neighbours who said they've not noticed anything, which is surprising seeing as its so loud. The noise is loudest in our living room, which is directly above the cellar, to the point where the floor vibrates, and opening the door to the cellar, we can hear pipes rattling. Our landlord has been quite dismissive, as it's usually a temporary thing, and originally we weren't even sure if our house was to blame. However, this weekend, at the same time on both days, the humming has started. Yesterday it was on constantly for 2 hours, with no water/heating provoking it; today it came on around the same time, and is still on going, 3 hours later. Any idea what to do? Even if I went down to the cellar I wouldn't know what to look for. I'm not sure if this constitutes an emergency plumber call out? Thanks

water hammer, caused by unclipped pipes, ball valve judder in tanks or wc, clip pipes, fit equilibrium ball valves, fit water hammer arresters, it could be pressure related fit pressure reducing valve.

All the answers are corrective ones but further investigation is needed if it’s only when the Wc is flushed well there’s your answer a new inlet water filler (torbeck) is required some of these problems never get resolved
