Insulation

Seal ground floor air vents

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.03 PM

Hi, Question: I have 2 air vents, one in the lounge and one in the kitchen. The both let in lots of cold air and I want to seal them from the inside ONLY (allowing the air to still travel in the walls if needed). Is this ok? House setup/key facts: I live in a 1960s end of terraced house where the lounge has been extended and the kitchen is open plan with just a breakfast bar separating them. I’ve upgraded the old open gas fireplace to a DEFRA log burner with a sealed flue. I’ve been monitoring the humidity in the rooms over the last year (even temporarily blocking it) and it has ranged from 40-65%.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In most modern insulated homes, sealing vents will actually force more air into ducting, resulting in higher energy costs and even causing leaks in some cases. If your home is older and still uninsulated you may temporarily seal air vents in the winter to aid in comfort. However, I would not recommend permanently sealing up the vents under any circumstance.
