Gap in front of hearth
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.03 PM
I have a gap approx 120cm wide and 2-3cm deep in front of a slate hearth. IT is approx 5mm deep. The rest of the flooring is pine floorboards. We are having a carpet fitted up to the hearth. How do I bring this gap up to the same level as the rest of the floor? Is it better to lay a strip of wood down or fill the gap with concrete/mortar? Many thanks for any advice. I think the carpet layers are planning on a section of gripper that can be stuck down rather than nailed.

If it we me, i would glue a piece of plywood in the space. Its too shallow for cement and self levelling is messy

I would treat this as if it where a gap in the floor boards a back fill it with a piece of pine. This can easily be sanded and will match with the rest of the floor.
That way if you ever decide to remove the carpet you don’t have a messy strip of cement or something equity ugly.
