Air brick ventilation near gas meter
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.03 PM
Hi. We have a very small under the staircase storage area/room which has an air ventilation brick which we would ideally like to seal up as it lets in quite a lot of cold air. The storage area does contain our gas meter though so we are wondering if the air brick is actually a legal requirement here for some sort of gas ventilation purpose? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Lots of forum posts out on the internet with conflicting answers. Thanks in advance.

Hi there , no it doesn’t is the simple answer , but I can guess that the air brick is there for good reason . I am guessing your house is older than 50 years and thus is built with solid brick walls the airbrick is allowing the air to flow in your cupboard if you brick it up you will almost certainly start to get mould on your exterior walls my advice is change it for a new airbrick where the vents are Slanted and thus less drafty
Hope this helps

Where they may be subject to extremes of tempreture.
Where food is stored.
Where they may be exposed to accidental damage.
Where they may cause an obstruction.
In damp or corrosive atmospheres.
In close proximity to electrical wiring.
Where they will constitute a danger to anyone. In buildings of two or more floors above ground level no meter shall be installed in or under a stairway or in any passage which provides the only means of escape in the event of a fire. So exclude these and see where you are. Also you need to understand why that ventilation is there, for that you might need to check Building Regs.
But if you want to be 100% sure, call Gas Safe, it's free and practical. Just get ready to wait for around 30 minutes as they are really busy !
Hope that's helpful.
