adding cold water tank

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.45 PM

Honestly - I never thought I would ask this, like ever but here we go - is it possible to add a cold water tank to the existing combi boiler with hot water storage system? I always wanted to get rid of the cold water tank and was always glad that I never had it in my properties, until ... this year. In this flat - I wanted to get rid of it, since day 1 but just do not have the funds. And this year, there was a time when most people were without the water for 9 hours 1 day and about 4-5 hours for another 4-5 days after. We had tankers sitting with fresh water just a few streets away, but I had no problems at all - I have not even noticed that there was no water, OK no washing was done and cooking. tea was water from the bottle. But otherwise - no problem at all. For once in my life, I could wash and give the baby a bath with no problems at all. For once I appreciated having it, and so are a ew of my neighbors as well :) Hence, I now want to know if this is possible to bring the all hated water tank, maybe pf a smaller scale, into the existing system that is without one? and if so, what would it take and how much (are the usual questions) thank you in advance

Typically you wouldn't add a water tank to a combi boiler system because it's mains fed which provides better water pressure, you could change it to water tank fed if there is enough height between the tank and highest tap the problem with doing this is you will have significantly less water pressure Also I think you will find it difficult to find someone willing to carry out this kind of work because of its unusual nature, whoever does do it will require a strong knowledge of how these two different systems work so they can put the proper design / controls in place to ensure the system will work without problems after the tank has been installed

I think the previous answers slightly misunderstood the reason behind your question.. you want the convenience of a combi with the storage a a traditional tank.. There is no need to change the combi system itself to add storage capacity to it.. I've done it several times where supply is really poor pressure or is prone to failing.. The simplest solution is to add a 50 or 75 gallon storage tank into the cold water feed supply, the output from that is then boosted to mains pressure feeding the cold taps and combi.. the combi install is then a standard one with inbuilt storage capacity.. doing it that way means you only need a 1m head height for the pump so it works really well sitting at just waist height anywhere you can fit it.. So no, you don't need extra valves, cylinders, or loft spaces.. you just need a tank and the right pump plumbed in the right way and it works a treat...

It is possible to install a C/W cistern, to feed a H/W cylinder and boost the supplies. The hot water can be heated via the combi boiler heating circuit with additional controls and valves. easier to do if your flat is on the top floor and with a loft space, more difficult if not. Hope this helps.

You can add a unvented hot water storage system to a combi. Not sure of cost as it varies on installation
