Wallstar 15/20 Control Thermostat Knob tripping electrics

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.44 PM

Evening all, switched on the boiler today and went out this afternoon came home to non running boiler, switched off power and restarted but failed to run, i powered on the system and the amber mains neon illumintated, adjusted the thermostat knob on the front of the unit and my electrics tripped on the ring the boiler is wired into, i was able to reset electrics and prove a few times the termostat knob when turned to engage is causing the trip fault, has anyone come across this issue before and a failed control thermostat being common?, is a simple change out of the control thermostat just required and easy enough to do?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi If the trip for the ring the boiler is connected to is a B32 circuit breaker then, then the current flow is excess of 32 amps. Which would indicate a short to negative within the boiler/heating circuit. If the RCD or RCBO is triping this would indicate a leakage to earth greater than 30 mA. It is unlikely that the thermostat is responsible for the fault. You should get a qualified electrician or heating engineer to diagnose the fault. Hope this helps Regards Andy

Unlikely to be thermostat. My money is on an electrical fault with the boiler. Which normaly would run off a 5 amp fuse in the spur and a 16amp breaker i think. Gas safe engineer will diagnose easily.

I would get a qualified electrician out: there’s obviously some electrical fault . Most gas boilers should have a 3amp fuse, I would have thought at least the quick blow fuse would go first before tripping the rcd on the 230v ring main .. a polarity test on gas appliance should be done with services.
