Roofing

Shingles of roof fitted, blew off, condensation

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.44 PM

Hi I have a Blackburn style house (metal roof structure) which has been reroofed. The roofer initially started laying polyglass on the front of the house; which was halted when we noticed, as we agreed tiles on the quote. We asked about tiles and were told the roof cannot take them, so asphalt shingles were used. They shingled over the polyglass at the front of the house. At the back they appear to have just hammered them onto the bare deck. They have all blown off the back of our house (north face) and some off the front in a recent storm. The roofer is returning to essentially replace them for free. We also noticed a huge amount of condensation before they blew off; there appears to be no form of ventilation fitted. We were told that was extra as it wasn’t quoted for… Should shingles have felt underlay? Should asphalt shingles even have been suggested? Is the weight really an issue? I have a structural engineer in the family and he tells me that is a heap of rubbish - apart from slate, almost everything can be put up. Should ventilation be expected with a roof of this style?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

ventilation is required with all roofs, as you have a structural engineer in the family and he does not seem to think there is a weight issue perhaps he should project manage the job. these were prefabricated houses generally with sheet aluminium roofs,
