Converting front garden to driveway for 1 car
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.44 PM
I have a small front garden that I'm wondering if I can convert into a driveway for one car. The area itself is 3mx4m in front of a typical terraced house. If I wanted to convert this to a driveway, would I need to get permission? I realise that it doesn't meet the requirement for a dropped kerb but I would still be able to fit our car. Or is this not possible at all?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You will need planning permission to drop the kerb stones the driveway itself can be anything you wish if you have a slope you will need to put an acro drain in and a soakaway due to legislations if you have block paving, if you want gravel driveway I always use driveway grids.

Hello,
Yes, it is possible but you must get permission from the local council. Obviously no need permission to convert your front garden, that's your own property so free to do anything you like. It could be a bit of a hassle to get permission and still not guaranteed but worth a writing.
Hope my answer helps

If you have a exiting wall to the front of the property it may be listed dependant on the age of the premises.
before contacting the local council, have a chat to your neighbours as they will be the ones to object, at least you can gage the response to save wasting time and money if they are on the back foot

Like others have said will need for dropping curb also if you live in a garden city area the rules vary so check with your council on this, as you may have to keep a proportion green. Also if having people or loose stones I would use grids to help prevent them going on to public right of way. Also like been mentioned before i would put some sort of aco drain in to stop water running of in to the high way as you can not let it run off.

You need planning permission if your building is listed or in a conservation area. You also have to apply for a drop kerb if you are using your front garden as a driveway.
