Vynil silk won't accept matt emulsion

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.44 PM

Hi, Any advice please. I want to have matt walls and ceilings, I have a new property and vinyl silk is on every ceiling plus its been painted on a heavy anaglypta paper, It's also on all the hall walls. There is also old high gloss on the architraves, I have been told that all the ceilings hato be sanded, in fact all of it, plus it could be hard to get the wallpaper off even with a steamer as it will struggle to penetrate. Can anyone advise, I can't do it myself as I am disabled. Any opinions from tradesmen would be seriously appreciated..

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Prianka Ive used a product in the past for this situation. It is called Wallpaper cover-up By Zinsser. It covers very well also stain blocks and seals the wallpaper. Apply one coat by roller followed by two coats of Matt emulsion . It’s a oil based product and high in voc (very strong smell) so you will need to wear the appropriate PPE. Unlike a regular emulsion which can cause wallpaper to bubble and blister, Zinsser’s Wallpaper Cover Up seals the wallpaper protecting it from the moisture in the paint and once dry, this one-coat system creates a new surface that’s easy to paint.

A good quality matt trade paint should go over the silk without too much of a problem - have a look at the durable emulsions from Crown. Obviously you can't sand it first if it's a textured paper underneath so you need the trade paint to get the adhesion you need. If you're a bit nervous doing that you can paint with an eggshell finish first and then top it with Matt. You don't need a wallpaper primer as the paper has already been painted.

Matt emulsion will cover silk no problem as silk is shiny and Matt is not two coats of mat that is what paint issues to whitewash walls
