Levelling out of soil but prevent damp on house bricks
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.44 PM
I have raised garden beds on a sloped garden that I would like to level out to all one level in line with the back door. What is the best solution to having it levelled but the soil not going against the brick of the house. I assume this would cause damp. Do I paint the bricks/cover them or get something in its place?

To solve the damp issue I would recommend installing a french drain system by digging a 300mm wide trench 450mm down from your damp course lined with Terram and a 100mm perforated pipe layed in the bottom, make sure to remove the soil from the brickwork and paint it using black jack and lay a polythene sheet against the wall prior to laying terram. Cover the pipe with gravel and wrap with terram and back fill ready to level your garden
Hope this helps, Matt

As long as it doesn’t sit above the damp course the bottom two bricks you should be completely fine

I think you can paint them without any problem, and it's an easy and cheap solution👍

I would lay in a PVC damp proof membarne against the brick work before back filling the raised bed to the block work

either paint with a product called black jack or lay some DPC (damp proof membrane) up against the house to stop any moisture against the brick work as i have seen this blow the muck joints after a while, although if you are below the dcc on your house i would not bother installing anything.
