Hi, I want to fit 2 wired smoke alarms

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.45 PM

Hi I want to fit 2 angel wire smoke alarms. I’m picking up connection from the 1.5mm cable in the loft with a junction box. I will use a 3 core and earth cable but on the new wired alarm only has Neutral, live and interconnect (white) the alarm is all plastic and doesn’t have an earth connection. Please could you help. Where would I connect the earth from the 4 cable wire to? Can I connect the earth to the screw that holds the alarm to the beam?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

With all due respect you shouldn’t be doing this work. It’s installing or modifying an existing circuit. It clearly won’t be tested or certified.

Hiya Joe, The Previous answer covers it well, it's best when installing any kind of electrical accessory to use an Approved Electrician. They will provide you with a minor works cert for a job like this.

If you are asking such questions as this I feel you are not competent to do the job. Therefore, I concur with the previous two answers.

Smoke or fire alarm heads do not require earthing. So don't connect earh conductor anywhere, just twist it and leave it free inside the smoke alarm fitting. Note that all plastics are classified as insulation; don't conduct electricity and there is no risk of shock to persons. Smoke or fire alarms heads are double insulated.
