Damp Proofing

Mould growing in corner of first floor bedroom

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.26 PM

The corner wall of my first floor 1911 mid terrace bedroom is wet with moisture and mould has grown. There is a shared passageway with the neighbours so the shape of the house means that the back of the house on one side is exposed and it is this end corner of the house that is exposed where the problem is. It's a room that is normally well ventilated with the window open. I don't know if the condensation that has formed is due to a problem with the brickwork, guttering, roof or perhaps something else. I have taken a couple of photos I can send to hopefully get a better idea of it for any answers I get. Thanks in advance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there sounds like you’ve got damp question is where and how is it getting inside ? Most times if the damp is lower than 1 meter off of the ground it’s a dpc problem without seeing it first hand maybe try having the cavity cleaned and air bricks fitted secondly it’s a job for the damp experts good luck

For reasons of ph. Mould will not grow where incoming damp exists . This is purely condensation and possibly due to wall temperature being low . The cure is to raise the internal temperature of the wall . Insulation will do that.

without actually looking at the house its really impossible to say exactly what is happening, could be an insulation, roof, wall, issue, you dont say how old the house is, you have also confused me just a bit as you say its a mid terrace but not the end that joins the neighbours do you mean its the middle of the room as a mid terrace would have neighbours either side. also very seldom is rising damp the cause of any dampness even at low level , rising damp is usually only diagnosed by a company that wants to sell you a damp proof course. according to the latest which survey it is misdiagnosed in over 75% of cases rising to 95% in older properties by all the major damp proof company's who also happen to be the founders of the P.C.A who are supposed to be so called independent damp proof experts.

Normally if there is damp or a mould residue on bedroom wall on a ground floor Means in cavity is storing water from a few sources from top of building water getting in finds it’s own level or from dpc would need to see this to find out how to mend this air vent or trickle spaces to let it escape but over all rather than guess a good look at it would give me a better diagnosis
