Can’t isolate feed to shower

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.41 PM

Hi All, I’ve just bought a house with a built in mira915b. The airing cupboard is right behind it so very accessible. The flow valve is playing up and I want to remove it so I can change o-rings and grease it but I can’t isolate the water. The hot is fed from the cylinder with a gate valve that only turns so far and only slows the flow, the cold is fed from the header tank with no way of isolating. I’ve tried turning mains water off and leaving the shower running to see if it empties the tank but it just seems never ending so I gave up. Any suggestions as I really need to sort this valve out

Hello, Assuming your shower is not fed from a pump with isolation valves fitted. If you bung the cold water feed to the cylinder and open the hot taps this will drain out the hot service pipe. If you bung the cold down service this will stop the cold to the taps. Assuming the bungs stay in you will be fine. If not isolate the tank on the mains side and open hot and cold pipes This is all assuming your cold side is on cold down service and not mains.

If you google radiator change kit they come with 2 bungs that you will be able to use in your cold water storage tank to stop your flow of water, if you turn on a supply that you want to isolate then go to your cold water tank put your arm in and feel which one is pulling water then you know that is the one you need to bung , or else follow the pipe work for the shower to see where they are fed from, you may need to wrap a bit of ptfe on the bung to get a good seal, if you have a shower pump make sure you turn the power off before it is bunged or turned off with the isolation valves, hope this helps
