Safety of fitting gas hob ..

I have had a gas hob fitted a couple of months ago into older work tops which are laminated on wood.The gas fitter removed the tape which he had put on to pack on the work top as he had problems with tightening it all around as the brackets were too short but and had to get longer brackets which improved the tightening. I had no problem with the original gas hob as it was fitted with glass surround. This gas hob appears to be scorching near to the hotter ring and is concerning me as to why. Can you advise as would be most appreciated as I am seventy and a widowed. Kind regards Vivien M Harkness(Mrs)
