Is it possible to remove 2mm from the long edge of a tile?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.44 PM
Bit of a strange one, but we need to do a repair on a section of tiling, however we cannot find any tiles which are the same size as the originals. The ones in place are 98mm x 330mm and can only find ones that are 100mm high. The length doesn't matter as much, but the height is important due to it being in the middle of existing rows of tiles. Is it possible to sand tiles down, as in my (DIY) experience, they would just chip down the length even with a powered cutting disc?

It is possible to remove only a couple of mm but the only problem doing so is you can cause mini chips along the cut edge. The only way to really prevent this using a high quality wet cutter with a good diamond blade such as a rubi. Any cheap tools will just damage the tile. All though if you are putting a cut edge next to a clean edge when you grout it this will become obvious to the naked eye.

Hello yea it’s more than possible to cut down tiles with out them chipping you can use a wet cutting machine or a diamond blade it won’t chip at all,The only problem with cutting a tile down is you’ll loose the factory finished edge, it will be clear to the naked eye that it’s a cut especially as you said it’s for an existing row already something to consider but wouldn’t stand out to much you could also machine polish the edge and you would hardly notice it’s even a cut once grouted
