Vaillant EcoTec F29 Error Code

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.44 PM

New Vaillant boiler installed a few weeks ago and then it stopped working, showing error code F29. The installer came out a couple of days later while I was at work and later told me it was not a problem with the boiler but the condensation pipe that connect the bottom of the boiler to the kitchen waste pipe was blocked with food, etc. He said he cleaned out the waste pipe and then the boiler worked. I was just wondering if this was something that should have been cleaned out as part of the installation job or not? If the problem had been the boiler then he wouldn’t have charged me but because it was the waste pipe then there is a charge. All fair enough of course if true but I just wondered if it all sounds reasonable to the experts here.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello, it takes quite a long time, as in months or years, for food build-up to block waste pipes as the plug hole only lets small food items in so one large chunk of food cannot just go down and block it. It must have been small bits of food over a long time. If he fitted a new boiler to an existing condensate pipe and the old boiler was working fine from that same condensate pipe then he'd have no reason to do anything with the sink waste end of the condensate pipe as there would be no reason to suspect it would be blocked or the old boiler would have had the same issue. If, during the boiler installation, he fitted a new condensate pipe from boiler to sink waste pipe then his new 21.5mm pipe would have been completely clean and couldn't have got blocked in such a short space of time. So to be fair, if it was an existing condensate pipe not fitted by him, and really was blocked as the engineer said and he saw visual evidence of a back-up of condensate water and food debris then that would cause an F29 fault code and it wouldn't be his fault. It might have been a good idea for him to photograph the blockage as evidence or to reassure you as you were not present at the time but if you get an F29 again soon then you'll know his diagnosis was incorrect. If you don't it looks like he was telling the truth. I haven't had any brand new Vaillants have an F29 fault code although it can happen several years down the line to some. Also worth mentioning, in stormy weather like we have had over the past three weeks, a gale force wind can affect the operation of the boiler if the wind overpowers the boiler's fan. This would not happen normally but only in VERY strong winds and an exposed flue terminal, it is possible to have ignition lockout because of the wind. Again, the winds have died down now so the F29 should not reoccur unless similar very strong, prolonged winds in future from the same direction. Hope this helps!

The condense pipe should have its own pipe run not connected to the kitchen sink! The error code will be back within the next few weeks. Potentially could be a gas valve error as I’ve come across it in my time. Hope this helps
