How can I protect my ongoing mural that's on a wall that was newly painted with vinyl Matt?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.44 PM

I engaged the services of a paint manufacturer who produced his paints and painted the walls I needed for a mural. He primed the walls with water sealant, and the walls were also screeded, then the water sealant applied again before he painted the wall with his Vinyl Matt paint. I started my artwork, and noticed that there were bubbles on the wall. In fact, when they peeled, they peeled all the way to the screeded wall, proof that the paint didn't bind to the wall. I'm in the middle of the project and in need of a solution for preserving the masterpieces on the wall. I was told to seal the whole work with a clear coat when I'm done, and that it will protect the wall from peeling any further. But I don't know how far that can go, and I sincerely don't want to scrap off the whole wall, which stretches over 50 meters. Please what do you advice? Edit: following the first response, which I duly appreciate, it's an exterior wall. Thank you.

Firstly if it’s an internal wall I do not understand why it’s been water sealed secondly if it’s exterior wall you can’t use vinyl Matt so if it’s the 1st instance by sealing with a water seal you have formed a barrier on the wall where any coats of paint on top cannot bind to the wall they are binding to the seal hence probably why it’s peeling if it’s the second instance then your problem is the vinyl Matt to protect a mural on any wall to preserve it I would always recommend sealing it after painting with a clear varnish but you may have bigger problems depending on which instance has been carried out

The problem lies in the fact that the wall was not properly prepared to begin with or most likely moisture builds up behind the sealant and has no release, if you allow a patch or gap around the edges of the wall (1cm) it will allow the escape of moisture. The wall has had 2 coats of water sealant so your mural is not adhering to the wall but the sealant itself, if there is bad ventilation in the room or you are mixing different types of paint that could cause it too (what kind of mural are you doing, what paints are you using, etc) I'm afraid the fault lies with poor preparation, where there are any large bubbles try popping them or with patches of smaller bubbles you will have to scrape it off and start again, if the rest isn't bubbling at this stage there is no need to scrape the whole wall, I would advise using Zinnser Gardz - Problem Surface Sealer on the affected area's. Lastly, use an artist grade clear varnish to protect the mural, unlike decorators clear varnish this can be removed using certain products without damage to the mural, gives protection against knocks and damage like graffiti, hope this proves helpful - key point moisture, humidity and heat!
