Extensions

Massive draughts

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.44 PM

Hello, have had quite a large extension done. Vaulted roof out from the house and a flat roof running along side. There is draught (on windy days, wind) coming in from under the skirting around the entire build. It's strong enough to move a plastic ball across the room, and in cold weather we simply can't heat the house with the UFH. Builders don't want to know. It's obvious to me that it's coming in from outside above the wall and down through the dabbed plasterboard. The PB on the inside of the house is FREEZING. What do I do? Call building control? They have signed everything off, and clearly something wasn't done correctly. Given that i can't force a the builder to.come back and have a look, im not sure what the next step is? Thanks Edit - in desperation I have removed a section of skirting and foamed the bottom of the PB to seal it off

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, You could apply sealant along the bottom of the skirting board (depending on your floor finish) as a temporary solution until you can get someone to find the route of the problem. I hope this helps!

If the builders won't answer definitely contact building control and see if they can see the problem .

If the wind is blowing in cold air then that means the building has not been sealed properly from the outside side. Or the other possible cause could be it is coming up through vents installed in the build which are a requirement for building regs. Did the building have an air test on completion. If this is was not the case I would suggest getting one done and going from that to see where it is leaking air

Hi before you move the skirting board would check the cavity barrier they are installed and there’s most of the draft always comes from second? Any drill through cavity walls if any for air ventilation they must be sealed before installing the grill cover
