Damp Proofing

Can I block my air vents?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.26 PM

My house was built in the 1950’s and there are air vents in each of the bedrooms. Is it okay for me to block these up?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi the rooms need ventilation to stop condensation on the Windows and to allow the damp air to escape, if you have new Windows fitted they should have vents and this would then allow you to block these vents.

As already suggested ventilation is an important factor in getting rid of unwanted humidity in the home just blocking all the vents cause a problem if there isn’t sufficient ventilation on your current windows.

great question! considering the age of the property (1950's) the assumption is the building is dual skinned and of cavity wall construction not a solid wall. It's therefore not recommended blocking any vents in a cavity wall construction as they provide air flow through the cavity walls, which ensures the whole property is well ventilated and doesn't trap moisture which can cause a lot of problems. Also a consideration is gypusm or OPC materials will trap moisture so any unwanted moisture within the property will be absorbed into the substrate and cannot evaporate. using a suitable material, providing a suitable internal temperate and adequate ventilation will keep the building working effectively. Hope that helps
