Large gap at the bottom of patio doors

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.26 PM

Hi everyone, My wife and I are renovating a 1960s bungalow to be our home in retirement and we have a question about weatherprrofing and insulating a gap of 45mm at the base of a set of new aluminium patio doors. The builder built the gap for the doors 75mm too tall and the window fitter installed the doors roughly midway in the opening leaving a gap above and below. The gap above is filled with expanding foam and the gap below is taken up by 45mm thick timber. The timber is visible both outside and inside, because the floor level is 35mm lower then the bottom of the door frame. Can anyone helps decide how to provide support for the doors that is weatherproof and does not create a cold bridge to the inside? Many thanks, Nick Thanks for the advice. I decided to drop the doors to correct level, put all of the gap at the top and fill that gap with a piece of tanalised timber further protected by a waterproof board and rendered or tiled with slate to match the wall.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would suggest removing the doors and adding a 50mm knock on to the head of the doors. Probably isn’t going to look great but it will save buying a new set of doors. Alternatively buy a new set of doors that are made to measure. Hope this helps 👍

I would agree with above answer . Lowering the doors and adding fitted to top will work but not look good. However depending on your budget. Like above answer new doors would be best. If you don't have the budget then lower doors and fill top

I agree, use a 50mm add on to the head of the doors and then use a 65mm trim to cover the head. This will hide the knock on line and will tidy up.

I would remove the doors and (depending on the neighbouring elements) I would either raise it to the lintel or drop it down to ground level and build the void above it up with a light timber structure of some description. Timber packer will not create a cold bridge and realistically you could leave it as it is (just cover the timber in a weatherproof membrane of some sort) but I can assume it doesn't look very pleasing to the eye. Hope this helps. P.S. - And charge the extra work to the builder who built the opening too big.
