Who to fit access hatch to get to boxed-in pipework

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.26 PM

We have boxed in pipework (including soil stack) in our extension, and we now have rats who have used it to access the loft & in between ceiling & upstairs floorboards. We've had pest control out to put baits in the loft, but can still hear them above the ceiling. What's the best trade to install an access hatch in the box work so we can see what's going on & fit something to stop them getting in? Not sure if it's plasterboard or plywood

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would either cut a hole in the box work or take part of it down to see what is happening. Once the rat problem is solved then either put a small access panel in or just completely board it back up. The main thing is to find out how the rats are getting in and then solve that problem first.

Hello, I would recommend a plumber or handyman to gain access into the boxing, then work with pest controllers to emlimate the rats, then make good the hatch which could then be inspected every month to en sure the rodents haven't returns

You would need either a handyman or carpenter firstly remove a good enough section to be refitted/repaired as an access panel try to see where rats/mice are getting in. I would personally install a wire mesh or similar to prevent access above the inspection hatch
