Gas Works

Black smoke from boiler exhaust.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

Hi I tried to get an answer to this question from another trade, and while I did get some help, they didn’t really address my issue. I know that gas engineers sometimes have experience of oil condensing boilers. Is it possible for the plume from an oil condensing boiler to be very dark, grey/black in colour? Would this indicate a problem that could be dangerous? I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You really need to speak to a oil heating engineer . They are the ones with the knowledge and understanding of these systems

From what I remember a small amount of white smoke is normal, but black or dark smoke coming from your boiler is a sign of a potentially serious problem. You should call a certified oil (OFTEC) engineer immediately as it seems to be a sign of incorrect combustion.

You need to get this looked at asap, it’s burning incorrectly and a potential risk! A strip down service of the baffles, new nozzle, filters cleaned and pressure / air checked. Plus many more things need to be checked.
