Black plume from oil condensing boiler

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.40 PM

Hi My neighbour recently had a new oil condensing boiler installed. The plume from the exhaust seems to be very dark, almost black. Is this even possible in a condensing boiler? If it’s normal and not dangerous, I don’t want to bother him about it. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you

Black smoke coming from a boiler is the cause of improper burning. They should check that the oil is burning normally, because if it is not, it will produce a dark coloured smoke that can be seen from a flue or may actually come out from the boiler directly. The cause of it can be down to several reasons. (1) of which can be down to an improper mixture of air and oil, (2) blocked fuel nozzles, or (3) just an obstructed flue. I would assume it is down to oil building up in the combustion chamber due to a delayed ignition. This can be dangerous as the excess oil can suddenly ignite causing oil to splatter out of the boiler. I would recommend they have a suitable gas registered engineer attend to investigate this issues, even have the engineers who fitted it return (as it should be under their warranty).

Hi, You definitely require a oftec oil engineer to carry out a service, it’ll be caused by soot in the turbulators and the burner. Regards
