Central Heating

3 bed bungalow needs new rads throughout and new boiler.

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.40 PM

Don't know where to start with which trade. All 8 rads in bungalow need replaced, possibly pipework as well. The current oil boiler is a conventional oil boiler which I'd like to change to a more efficient oil combi. Who does what jobs and what jobs may I encounter when doing this? Do I need a plumber for the rads or is that a central heating engineer job as well as fitting the new boiler? Should I anticipate that new pipework other than the small adjustments to change the old radiators to new compact rads would be needed? Am I way out budgeting 5k for all this? Thanks for taking a read.

A plumbing and heating company should be able to carry out all of these works for you. First step, I would ask them if they have anyone qualified in oil on the firm before getting them out to quote. As for changing over to a combi, things to bare in mind is cold water flow rates and pressure. Whoever you get to quote the job should test these and advise. Also any shower pumps etc that may be installed will have to be removed. From experience as a rough ball park I would say a job like this would be around 7k+vat

Usually means air in system or not enough water in radiators that take longer to heat or don’t heat start with these radiators using a bleed key at top of radiators however may take pressure from boiler so would need to check manufactures guild to make sure boiler has right pressure once bleed radiators or boiler will not heat water or radiators

You need a gassafe engineer who is competent in de commission of a oil boiler. I would try to find a gassafe engineer who is not vat registered to save 20% and you might pay around the 6k area depending on size of boiler and how many rads you need and yes you'll need all new pipes and a gas meter installed if you haven't got one installed already. Most importantly make sure your engineer is on the gassafe register as it gives you a little bit more protection if things go wrong.
