Opening in a lathe and plaster wall - lintel or wooden beam?
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.57 PM
Hello, when opening a door in a lathe and plaster wall, do you still use a steel-reinforced lintel? or would you use a wooden beam instead? Thanks!
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

All depends if it’s supporting anything substantial above to what would be appropriate lintel to use

Hello. The opinion is: if the wall is plastered it is best to use concrete lintel, or if the wall is brick and not plastered catic lintels should be used. Thanks.

The simple answer would be when you strip back the wall if its solid brick behind you need a lintle if it's hollow you don't if it's an external wall leave it alone and get in a professional in.
Hope this helps

Very doubtful a lathe and plaster wall is holding up anything substantial although it is always worth investigating prior to demolition. Forming a doorway in this type of wall generally is adjustment of the timber studs and a timber head
