Building an understairs cupboard

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.56 PM

Hi. I would like a cupboard built under the stairs for more storage in the hallway. I would also like laminate flooring installed in the hall to replace existing old carpet. Which should be installed first, the cupboard or the laminate flooring? Thanks for your time.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi it depends if the floor will be seen in the storage area. If it’s has a door and is visible I would laminate the floor right through. If you are building draws in the storage area and the floor won’t be seen you can save a little bit of money but flooring up to it

Laminate flooring should be installed up to the cupboard first and under the door installed threshold and after inside the cupboard. Reason for this is to allow laminate flooring to move. That's way is called laminate floating flooring. If you install on top of it flooring will get trapped and may start bouncing in some places and with time it will affect cupboard door margins, the door may start catching on the frame.

Hi yes the flooring should always be allowed to flex however you can acheive this by floating the understair structure over the laminate by boring holes larger than a spigot and setting it on the spigots this alows it to float over the floor but maintains the floor appearance too just an option of which there are many
