Damp Proofing

Possible damp near patio doors?

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.56 PM

Hi I moved into a new property last week and need some advice, one of the walls in the living room looked wet and the paint/plaster has started to bubble and flake away. I can’t find any evidence of a leak and wondered if someone can tell me how I know if this is damp, or who I should get to take a look at this. The wall has stayed the same since, hasn’t spread anywhere else etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

There is a very common condition known as hygroscopic dampness , it’s when the wall absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. For unknown reasons , most contractors don’t know about this condition . It’s not difficult to diagnose, using something very pointy , like a small screwdriver, twist into the wall as far as you can , if it’s 4+ mm deep , it’s most likely to be hygroscopic damp . This is the plaster absorbing moisture because it’s not supposed to be more than 2mm thick. Re-render those patches , behind the skirting too , for the cure

Have you tryed to put any heat or added a dehumidifier to the area to see if it can dry out , Also allow a air flow in that area to eliminate Condensation issues ??

Try a dehumidifier by the wall bit this could also be that your patio is above the damp proof course
