Deposit of 60% on rewire.
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.02 PM
I have been quoted £5200 for a full rewire of my 2 bedroom house., including plastering and VAT. My concern is that I have been asked for a 60% deposit. The work is due to start in 8 weeks time. My gut feeling is that the deposit is excessive. What do you think?

I don't ask for money up front personally but thats just me. Probably they are entitled to materials but they shouldn't cost more than £500 -£1000 for the electrical work anyway. I would definitely split the jobs and not pay for any plastering labour or materials until the electrical work is completely finished. You should expect two certificates for the work. An Electrical Installation Certificate and a Part P certificate from the electricians competent persons scheme to tell you the work is registered with building control. Don't part with any money until you have BOTH of these.

We ask for material costs to be covered prior to installation and then balance payable on completion

Seems quite high but I don’t know where you are. Get some other quotes or maybe agree the 60% to be paid on completion of first fix and plastering

As the quote includes plastering and VAT it would appear reasonable. However, stage payments would normally be preferred rather than large lump sum deposits. It is good practice for a tradesman to ask for stage payments as it assists with cash flow and protects him from being owed large sums of money. It is a fair way of remuneration. Personally I would not agree from a customers perspective to a 60% deposit. It leaves you vulnerable. 25% is a a more reasonable amount then full balance on completion.

Hi Dear,
For 2 bed house including plastering sounds normal to me. But normally electricians do not get involved with plastering.
About %60 deposit sounds a bit lot. To buy materials maybe but not %60.
