Bricklaying & Repointing

Reducing Size of a Window

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.44 PM

Hi all, I am in the process of re-doing my kitchen which involves reducing the size of a 2m window to 1m to accommodate wall units on both sides. The window faces my garden and a load bearing wall. My builder initially said he would use concrete blocks on the inside and red bricks on the outside without changing the current concrete lintel. Now he has changed his mind saying he will use timber on the inside and then board it up from the inside with red bricks on the outside. My question is, is it safe to use timber? or should he use concrete blocks and red bricks?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If they’re leaving the existing lintel in and just reducing the size of the window then yes it’s safe as it’ll still be bearing on the existing walls.

Well on my opinion I would use blocks inside but these is all depend on how you house as been build inside if is all timber frame, ore as been build with block work.

If the existing internal walls are solid, I would use either light or medium density blocks. You would then have definite fixing points for the brackets of the wall hung units.

Rule of thumb, go with whatever’s inside already if it’s blocks inside fill with blocks, shouldn’t be issue if lintel not being moved. Can be boarded but personally I’d block it up

A catnic lintel is used for the outer brickwork, not a concrete lintel.
