Tile over existing wood floor using Ditra Mat

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.43 PM

My fitter has advised me that the existing wooden floor in our shower room is flat and stable and has been down a long time, so it is ok to tile over it with use of a Ditra Mat. Is this risky as I see that Ditra Mat does not allow (invalidates warranty) use over a wooden floor. It is all ready to tile with under-floor heating and leveller...is this ok or should we rethink the floor prep?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello there if i understand correctly you want it tile over wooden floor with distra mat. Personally following the warranty i would not as if there is any play in the floor at all then it will lead to cracks and tiles coming loose. If the floor is solid and you have levelled over it then it should be okay to go straight over.

Ditra matting is a high performance uncoupling substrate for use on solid, concrete and wooden floors according to its info. Care must be taken to use the correct primers for wood, I’m assuming it’s wood not chipboard. The purpose of an uncoupling sheet is to allow for slight floor movement without causing movement to the tiles, which could cause joint cracking. If your unsure, you should call schulter technical for advice to get the correct information.

Personally I would always replace a floorboard floor that is going to be tiled to either a ply floor or a ply and tile backer floor (depending on if it’s going to be a wet room) All ply needs to be primed before tiling can happen. Then ditta mat can also be used as an extra or there are other products that n&c (one supplier) sell to act as a coupler

Hello there, Thank you for your question. I could suggest you using at least 18mm plywood over existing floor boards. Then if necessary self levelling and tills it over. If you want floor to be watertight use Durabase matt and tiles.
