How do I know if the guy is trustworthy if he asks for a deposit up front.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.43 PM

The worker, based in Dursley, ( the green gardens ) was here and his estimate was reasonable. He then asked for a deposit for the materials. That sounded like half the total price. I have two quotes now for the same job; One wants £750.00 and the one from Dursley wants £350.00. That is a big difference. This work will be very close to the house, a wall coated bungalow. Can you give me your advice please? Thank you , Kind regards Renate Mader

IF YOUR WORRIED ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE IN PRICE GET A THIRD QUOTE, ALL MATERIALS CAN VARY IN PRICE & QUALITY, ASKING FOR A DEPOSIT IS NOT UNUSUAL BUT YOU NEED TO DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE & CHECK THE GUY OUT THROUGH OTHER CUSTOMERS. GOOD LUCK ALEX

Deposits are common but wouldn’t recommend paying more than 30% that’s what we charge and find it a fair amount

You won’t know unfortunately however I personally would think twice about deposit for small jobs unless your looking at large re-wires ects

Hi Renate As a professional Landscaping company we never take money from any client until the materials arrive on site, so the client can see them prior to paying for them. Any company who cannot provide the materials for such a small job without taking a deposit I would avoid. Also I would advise you never accept a quote which is not written, listing the works to be completed and states fixed cost and I would always suggest 3 quotes. Remember if it sounds too good to be true it usually is! I hope that helps. Kind Regards Gordon

50% upfront covers materials fuel and tooling required plus extras, we always ask 50% upfront then the rest on completion unless job is goin to take longer you could always ask for previous customer numbers contact information to put your mind at ease.

On a job around £1000 no deposit should be needed in my opinion unless specialist materials are required. But on larger projects you would always expect to pay a deposit. If you don’t trust someone don’t handover any money! Stay safe and good luck
