Thud from boiler when cold tap turned off

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.43 PM

Hi, recently I started hearing a subtle thud from inside the combi gas boiler whenever we turned off a cold tap. Turning on the cold tap and running it makes no noise, only when it is turned off again. We've had no work done recently on the plumbing system at all. Thanks UPDATE: thank you all for your advice. Interestingly after 2 weeks without any changes to the system this noise just went away! It's been another 3 weeks now since then and it hasn't come back.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sound of pressure surge. Fast closing valve causing the water to suddenly stop which then leads to audible shocks. I have mostly noticed them in installs that lacks clippings on the pipes. Check if your pipes have any support to hold them in place. Alternatively, get an engineer to install water hammer arrestor. Ignoring this will eventually cause any joints to be weaken over time and result in pipe leak or burst. I hope this has satisfied your question. Thanks.

Definitely sounds like water hammer, best to get a plumber to fit a hammer arrester. This will take care of the problem.
