How to plaster around upvc door frame to avoid and avoid it cracking in future

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.45 PM

We've had new new upvc french doors fitted. For reasons I no longer remember we decided that we'd make good internally after the fitting. We had the door fitted nearer to the exterior than the old door and so have a gop of about 100mm all round the reveals between the frame and the existing plaster, where the brick/block is showing. I intend to fill that with jointing compound because I have quite a lot of the stuff having over ordered. I'm confident of getting a decent finish but am concerned about cracks appearing between the jc and frame later because cracks are starting to appear round windows where I have filled and decorated. Do you have any tips to prevent cracks appearing? Update 1 - The gap is only about 10mm deep, so not deep enough for pb. In any case, my concern is cracking between the upvc frame and whatever material is used for skimming.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

if the 100mm gap is deep enough (say 2cm at least) I would dot and dab using plasterboard and adhesive that Channel and skim the whole door reveal after. either that or use a bonding mix of plaster (purple thistle bags) to fill the gap and then skim the whole reveal. using a jointing compound might crack if the gap is too deep as I think anything more than 15mm should be done either in layers of plaster or use plasterboard as mentioned above to bulk out the gap. hope that helps.

Render mix or bonding. If it’s diy then I wouldn’t plaster board as can be too complicated if you’re not trained to do so… best way no crackin render mix or bonding them skim over

I wouldn’t use bounding as an undercoat for plaster stick plaster board or even sand and cement before plaster and I wouldn’t use your joint filler either hopefully this helps

Using a dotndab is not acceptable around the Frame because it will draw moisture if you use renovating plaster it will not crack or shrink after dubbing out then PVA and re scim
