Damp Proofing

Freezing cold box room with open air vent and window condensation

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.45 PM

Hi, We live in a mid 1950s semi. My daughters box room has a air went in the wall with an old grille on it, you can see daylight through it and the room is absolutely freezing. There used to be an old cylinder in the room which was taken out year ago when a modern boiler was installed in another room. The box room gets condensation on the window, we have replaced the window with a brand new upvc window but still get problems. The wall around the window is notably cold. My question is,I wanted to block the vent up as the room is freezing but I'm guessing this wouldn't help the condensation issue. If there something bigger causing this, such as poor insulation? We have an extractor hood in the kitchen which we always use and the bathroom has a similar air vent. Many thanks

Hi, Yes you have a good handle on this, Poor Insulation and Poor ventilation. The old vent was there to protect occupants from C0 gas emission as houses of that period may have used either coal burning fireplaces or gas appliances. You may as well block it up as at the moment it is a passive vent and has no control. Once you have addressed the insulation, then consider a moisture controlled ventilation extractor or multi room extractors. Mike

Where is your property? You require a condensation/Mould survey from qualified company. Ensure your property is evenly heated with no sudden drops in temperature is a very good start. Condensation can occur due to inadequate insulation, heating and/or ventilation. There is never 1 solution for all.

You can block it up after upgrading your insulation. However a whole house Piv unit (positive input ventilation unit) would be a better option
