How to level uneven floorboard ready for engineered wood floor in herringbone pattern.

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.45 PM

Hi I’m laying an engineered oak flooring, iv had to take up the old Lino tiles, & am having to replace the 6mm ply, but the floorboards the ply will be covering are very uneven, there are dips up to 10mm in places. Iv planed down most of the high spots but I need to level out the dips, I was going to do this with a self levelling compound, but am unsure weather to put the levelling compound onto the floor boards, then put down the 6mm ply, or do I put the ply down, then level out the low spots that will still be visible as the ply is so thin & flexible?? Then lay the engineered oak floor onto the ply/levelling compound? The customer has brought adhesive to glue down the floor, but I prefer to nail, my concerns are if I nail into the compound it will break up? Any help or advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would use PVA glue to stick and nail the 6mm ply all over the floor, making sure the nails are no more than 150mm apart. Then self level Compound over the low parts.

Nailing is not your best solution . You would be better using a 3.5g screw to secure the Ply . These are less likely to break up your levelling compound , and are less likely to loosen over time. Make sure the screws finish level on the face of the ply
