Hi,
Our boiler is in the kitchen and its vent/flue sits in the external kitchen wall at the front of the house. We want to build a lean-to-style timber-framed pergola with a Twinwall plastic roof along that wall creating light unenclosed outside the kitchen windows, the Pergola extends 3m from the kitchen wall. The vent/flue will be under it - from where the rafter board connects to the wall of the lean. The pergola will be open along the front, and one end (the other end will butt up against a fenced wall) we want an area outside to put a bench to sit on the deck built under it. to prevent gases from building under the Pergola we added a Plume kit at 87 degrees that go through a cutout in the plastic roof and extends at least 600mm above.
Is this design safe?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
You should not be adjusting the flue unless you are able to confirm/set the correct combustion ratios with a flue gas anyliser. My advice would be to contact a gas safe engineer to confirm its safety.
Hello, that sounds like incorrect usage of a plume kit. The purpose of a plume kit is to divert nuisance pluming of exhaust fumes up and away from low levels or to angle it away from adjacent properties, not to use as a work around for structural issues. A gas boiler's flue can only legally be installed, altered or tested by a Gas Safe Registered engineer in the UK. The flue must also be fitted to the manufacturer's instructions which are prioritised over general regulations. A Gas Safe engineer can read the manufacturer's instructions and even phone the manufacturer to clarify. If their (the manufacturer) permission can not be given in writing then it is not allowed.
This is a RIDDOR situation that is extremely dangerous, firstly the termination of the flue is not where the plume management kit terminates but where the flue from the boiler. Secondly you are not giving the appliance natrual air and you can not take the combustion air in a different area from the combustion flue under manufactures installation instructions. There is a possible solution to the flue, however this work needs to be carried out by a Gas Safe engineer and inform Gas Safe of this alteration.
If you look in your boiler manufacturers booklet it will give you all the safe measurements and will tell you what you can and cant do.
It could be possible if all the measurements meet the dimensions in the manufacturer installation booklet.
If you have not got the booklet you can download the full installation instructions from your boilers manufacturer website
