Leaking roof - Unsure about the works quoted

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.44 PM

I had a leak in the bedroom ceiling in July (terraced house). I had a roofer come round to clear the gutters, remove moss from the roof, and realign some brick tiles (in my understanding). It worked for a few months, but now the leak is back. I invited another company to quote and they said my previous roof repair has been a "disaster". They said that a contractor had put hips up where the roof joins to my neighbours without a secret gutter. Instead, they say I need: - The ridges that the contractor put on, to be taken off and set aside for reuse. - To insert a PVC eave gulley the full length of the roof to form a channel so the water can run freely to the gutter. I'm seeking advice whether the works described sound a correct way to repair the leak? I'm not sure what they mean by taking down the ridges - won't that leave my roof vulnerable for more damage? Also, I'm not sure if the first roofer in July put up any hips or ridges on the roof. I believe they were there originally when I bought the house 8 years ago and I never had a leak until now. Just trying to resolve the leak and ensure I won't be misled or ripped off. Thank you!

without looking its really impossible to say exactly what is happening , but sound like your under felt has eroded at the eaves depending on how far up the roof it has eroded will decide on the best course of action long term, short term they may work but without looking its really impossible to say, moss apart from being unsightly, blocking up the gutter & slowing down the water run off the roof dont really cause any real issues if your under felt is in good condition. your under felt again is no real problem until your roof tiles, hip tiles, or ridges fail. you only need a pin prick in the right place to create a major leak insurance company's recommend you replace your under felt every 20-25yrs your roof tiles will generally last at least twice that length of time. good luck Alex

I think you need to get a qualified roofer in to assess the problem properly obviously his last contractor did not know what he was doing
