Damp Proofing

What’s happening in my house

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.44 PM

We bought a split level property 7 weeks ago and after removing the carpets and laminate in the house we have released a terrible damp smell that has forced us to leave the property. There are no visible signs of damp anywhere and no one seems to know where to start. It’s not a concrete floor it’s floorboards and the entire house including bedding ,furniture, photos, all other goods smell damp and won’t wash out of clothes

You can’t smell damp , only fungi after it reaches 13ppm. The floor timbers have fungi impregnating from mild condensation under the laminate flooring or the carpet underlay . It’s not really an issue but for the smell which will take weeks of ventilation to clear. The timber has a void underneath which is part of the damp proofing system of the original design . The void is serviced by sub floor air vents front and back , this causes an air exchange and removes the ‘damp’ smell. If this is interrupted in any way , the smell will enter the house space . Check that the sub floor air vents are present and open , one every 2.5M is required
