Mist coat on once papered walls

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

Having stripped off the old wallpaper that has been up for yonks and was put up over sized new plaster would you still recommend going down the mist coat route for the vinyl matt emulsion that's going up. Appreciate any advice..thanks

In short, no. It does not need misting, though a good rub down with a fine sandpaper is a good idea. Small areas of dried adhesive can be quite hard to spot and will ruin a finish.

No, A mist coat is good for new plaster, there's no benefit to using it on paper.

No need for a mist coat but you do need to make sure there is no wallpaper paste residue left because it will react with the paint and spoil the finish. I would sand the walls to make sure they are in good condition. Then get some Zinsser Guardz and use that as a primer. Guardz will block any paste that's left on the wall, it will also help to smooth the surface and give you a good base for your emulsion. It's not expensive, water based so not smelly and it dries really fast.

Hi I would recommend that you line the walls with a lining paper 1200 grade it's never really successful when you painted walls that has had paper on because the walls were crazy and crack like a desert floor
