Light fitting into plasterboard with insulation

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

I'm looking to install a new pendant light. However, the ceiling has been plasterboarded over, with a layer of rockwall behind the plasterboard, so getting to the joist above is not easy. Would a fixing such as a Fischer Duopower straight into the plasterboard work? The light is approx 1kg, max 2kg with bulbs.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, Yes, you can still install your pendant lights but It will required more works e.g to open up the plasterboard and brace the joist across the beam that subsently transfer loads to vertical joist.. That will be able to take the load for the pendant lights. Electrical cables need to be installed up to the current regulations to BS7671:2018. Also, you need to avoid premature collapsing of equipment once installed. My own opinion I will not recommend to use the fischer doupower wall plug with the weight of 1kg or 2kg above your head..

Opening up a small work area in the plasterboard for "reach" and install the nescessary wiring & fitting a stronger support is a relative small effort to ensure it's secure & futureproof'd(should you wish to change to something significantly heavier as 1kg is light(excuse the pun)).

I would use nogging between joists in option safest method.
