PORTABLE BUTANE GAS BOTTLE HEATER CHANGEOVER TO PROPANE BOTTLED GAS

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

I have a 45 ft x 12 ft workshop which I use frequently during the winter months. I also have a portable gas heater which has been used in the past with the normal 15kg bottle of butane gas. I would like to convert this heater to run on propane and would have the 47kg propane bottle located outside the workshop with the gas supply pipe work running into the workshop through a wall and connected to the heater. I know that I will have to change the regulator that fixes to the bottle but is this a feasible conversion. The 15kg butane bottles are approaching £50 delivered now whereas the 47kg bottles are £82. so this could show quite a saving and I use at least one 15kg bottle of butane every 5 to 7 days.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

No worries with this at all. Change the regulator and make sure that you have enough pipe to go where you need it to without stretching. Put something on the wall where the bottle has to go so that it can be secured with a chain to prevent it ever falling over. An eye bolt with a chain and simple clasp will do. Propane burns hotter and should not freeze, but the regulator and pipe can, so it's worth putting some insulation on them or a simple wooden cover to protect them. In Wales, mine is on the North wall so I have it chained to the wall and then a simple wooden topper that sits over the top half of the bottle and foil backed tape on the pipe.
