Plastic pipe vs copper
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.25 PM
Appreciate there are a multitude of threads about this, but plastic pipe technology has clearly improved over time. I have to replace some 15mm central heating pipework with 22mm, and it will be a lot easier using plastic pipe and fittings as it's less upheaval. Is speedfit or other plastic pipe brands appropriate for this? In my previous house, the plumber used a combo of buteline pipe (generally in the loft space) and copper pipe drops to the radiators, although buteline seems to require special clamping tools which arent cheap.

Yes you can use plastic pipe for this.
The copper used for the radiators is mainly used to look nicer with straight lines.

Hello Rory, I have never recommended my customer to use plastic and push fit joint under floor as this joint start leaking after few years but in ducts and loft really easily to used and fast to doing the pipework.

Plastic pipe is fine to use for this but keep in mind that the internal diameter of plastic pipe is less than the equivalent copper pipe, 15mm copper pipe has an internal diameter of 14mm and plastic around 12mm. 22mm copper has an internal diameter of 21mm versus 19mm with plastic pipe. I don't use any plastic pipe when installing a heat pump system for this reason as flow rate is massively important to get the best from these systems.
