2nd Consumer Unit powering EV charger and supply power to 3rd Consumer Unit in my Garden room?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

Hi Apologies for my absolute stupid question. But I need help. I have recently undertook the build of a Garden Room (its basically completed and I need to talk Power for the room). Since I started the build I have had an EV charging point installed and the installed (Pod Point) fitted an Outdoor consumer unit under the meter box. My original plan was to run the Garden room power to a consumer unit in the Garden room from this EV charger consumer unit but it would mean changing te EV charger one to unit with more outputs. I know this would be on the outside of my house but I have seen lockable IP65 consumer units. Can someone tell me if this is even feasible? I cant come of the main Consumer Unit in the house due to its location (New Build companies clearly dont want this type of thing happening from the main board) T

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It should be possible to power your garden electrics from the same unit as your ev charger. You would need an electrician to check the cable size supplying the ev consumer unit to ensure it can handle the additional load and if it is suitable it will be a simple job to swap the consumer unit for one able to take an additional breaker. It may also be advisable to contact your ev installer if you want to change anything to ensure you do not void the warranty on the podpoint install.

Most EV charger around 7kw require 32a mcb and 4mm/6mm depending on method of install and length of cable to the charger and most people run it with data cable to meter to calculate how power the property is using with CT clamp.most property got a 60/80A main fuse and u wouldn't want blow the main fuse .A Load calculate of fuseboard would be suggest before installing EV charger in a property. I would Recommend calculate for the cable size of the garden room fuseboard before adding a ev to prevent fire or blowing out the main fuse

Providing the supply cable to your EV charger consumer unit is large enough to handle the additional load of suppling the garden building you will be able to change or upgrade this consumer unit to provide a feed garden building. An IP68 consumer unit is acceptable for outdoor installation providing entry and exit of cables are properly installed with weather tight cable glands. An electrician will be able to look at your installation and main fuse and calculate what additional load is available and suggest the most practical way forward.

I'd be surprised if EV consumer unit can take much more load. Normally they just wired is correct cable size to cover vehicle charging and possible start up surge. I imagine you be looking skts, lighting etc in new shed. Best advice employ a JIB electrician.

The simple answer is Yes that's possible but all depends the supply cable to your EV charger consumer unit. If is large enough to handle the additional load of suppling the garden building you will be able to change or upgrade this consumer unit to provide a feed garden building. Regarding your lockable IP65 consumer units answer is yes , can be installed as per 18 edition regulations. Any electrician should calculated and designed your new installation.
