Vent above new electric fire? Is this regulation as told by plasterer?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.25 PM

Recently we had our real bricked fire place pulled out and plasterboard into a larger open chimney breast. Stone floor. We chose an electric fire dimplex Stockbridge to be precise. Plasterer told us we must have fireboard installed and a large plastic vent above. That top board isn't plastered for some reason just bare fireboard with a white plastic vent. However, not it is mid October, windy and raining.. the soot and wind is blowing down the chimney with a horrendous draft. Could some one tell me if this was all necessary? the fireboard and vent? and if not what is the quickest long lasting way to stop the wind and the soot falling onto the new electric fireplace.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Not sure if it’s regulation to have the vent but it helps with airflow and prevents damp we have the same at our house the fire was already out and an electric fire was there and the hole was boarded and we had some really bad damp was advised to pop a vent in to help with the airflow

If you have no intention of using the open fire again, plug the chimney at roof with cement plug or closed chimney pot. Cut or remove fibre board, clean any soot spillage and plug with old sheets or duvet, replace board, no need for vent! Shaun
