There is no right or wrong answer to this, me personally through experience would recommend a small deposit then depending on work, an instalment to split finance. Obviously keeping majority of the money till the end and when customer is happy with the end product.

I believe that firstly if you are busy then a customer should give you a small deposit as a way of some sort of commitment for your time. Then depending on the customer and the size of the job stage payments could be worked out between both parties or if I am supplying the materials then a deposit to offset the cost. The reason I take a small deposit for time ots is so that customers then don't reneg right at the last minute leaving you with 10 days free in your diary with out any work

Only Pay upon completion of the job, and you are happy with everything. Any snags have been dealt with appropriately.

Personally, I don’t charge anything until the customer is happy with the finished job. Too many trades people ask for money up front and don’t finish the job to a satisfactory standard if at all.

I personally do not ask for a deposit for labour, if I am supplying all the sanitaryware/tiles etc then I ask for a deposit to cover the cost of materials
